Apostrophe The apostrophe is used above a
word for two reasons:
- to show ownership:
- Helen's exercise book - the book belongs to
Helen so the
apostrophe goes after Helen.
- The boys' changing room - the changing room
belongs to all the
boys, so the apostrophe goes after boys.
- to show that one or more letters are missing:
They've built a new stadium on the outskirts of town - the
apostrophe shows that ha is missing from They
